CHAPTER 7

Viral Tiryak i (Senior Captain) CommandDeck,Ready Room Destroyer Praxia.Clare System Ottoman Imperial Ship 295.3155 10:00:25

Senior Captain Tiryaki sat in his command chair glaring at the tac screen. That pirate battle cruiser had overtaxed their defense network and scored multiple hits on their aft quarter. The reactors were straining and damage icons were blooming across the rear of the ship. Those damnable missile platforms had an inexhaustible supply. He saw two of the pirate battle cruisers go up in a blinding flash.

“ Captain, reactors two, four, and five are shutting down. We have main power bus failure on all our forward rails.” The weapons officer said.

“ Captain, the target ship is exiting the system via gravity drive on vector one nine seven up twelve degrees.” The Tactical Officer announced.

He slammed his fist into the console. “Can we follow them.” He demanded.

“No sir, with our reactors in shutdown we are severely limited.” The engineer answered.

“Then get us clear of these pirates and fix it!” He screamed at them.

The ship turned and began accelerating out of the Clare system. He saw that the remaining ships were not pursuing. He stared at the tac display as yet again his prey escaped from his grasp. He looked at the engineering display. There was critical damage to several key engineering systems. Two of the graviton engines were damaged and there were holes all through the main plasma lines.

He noticed a flagged message in the com queue. It was tagged for the XO and encoded with a cipher. He copied it to his private files and instructed the AI to decode it. He stood and strode to his ready room.

The angular black craft sliced out into interstellar space. Wounded but not incapacitated. As it went into holding mode it all but disappeared in the black deep of space. Sitting in his ready room Tiryaki fumed about the failure.

He activated the com, “Chief engineer I want the damage repaired as quickly as possible.” He said.

The image of the Chief looked back at him with an angry expression, “Yes sir! I already have the entire section on it. I will have it done as quickly as possible.” He replied.

The engineering staff was reliable on the ship. They knew their job was to enable the ship to fight. They had to repair damage quickly in order for the ship to perform its function. Of all the sections engineering was the largest close behind was the gunnery section. In times of need most of gunnery could temporarily transfer to engineering making three quarters of the ships compliment engineering staff.

The bio-organic circuitry of the ship pulsed in the walls in a pink glow. They had taken moderate damage and the ship was responding. It was a semi living thing. The AI that lived in the ship grew from the circuitry. It was born with it. When the ship was in full repair it would again settle back into its violet hue.

“Captain the file is decoded.” The gruff deep voice of the AI said to him.
